The OCCASIONThe lunar calendar shapes India’s multitude of festivals and auspicious events. The Indian calendar is punctuated by the rise and fall of the moon and this event corresponds to the seventh day of the new moon of Magha.
The MYTHOLOGY
The roots of this festival lie in an ancient Hindu myth. The son of Lord Krishna strayed into his parent’s bedroom catching them ‘in the act’! The furious Lord Krishna consequently cursed his son with leprosy. Krishna’s right-hand man perceived this to be too great a punishment for such an innocent deed and stepped in to advise him to seek a cure at Chandrabhaga River. Daily meditations and worship of the Sun God followed for 12 years curing Lord Krishna’s son of his fathers curse. The sacred spot has been heralded as possessing curative properties ever since. Pilgrims and Krishna devotees gather at this same spot every year in tribute to this penance.
